Malty Media went on tour to sunny Auckland* last weekend to promote the CD launch of Angry Rabbit's electronica compilation album, "...Apropos of Nothing" (we are two thirds of Angry Rabbit, and our track 'Mescaline Man' is on the CD).

We played a storming set of old favourites plus one or two new things. It all went off pretty well, despite us finding, at the get-go, that Michael's laptop didn't want to know about my MIDI controller. A bit of frantic reconfiguring later, and it was all go
Khuja's PA was excellent, and our beats came across amazingly "phat". Oddly the two tracks I thought would go down badly came off sounding the best. The first was an odd mashup of hip hop/dub elements with Chinese pop and kung fu samples, and the second, provisionally entitled 'Ken Downie'**, which features backwards psychedelic guitars and a rather fruity exchange from an english language performance of Sophocles' Oedipus Rex***.
The audience was a strange mixture of classic blonde Auckland slappers and polynesian b-boys. We're not sure if they were here for us or the transsexual soul covers band that came on next, but we seem to have made off with their cover charges none the less. It was a weird night for the biggest event profit of our collective careers, but that's crazy old Auckland for you.
Big ups to gig organiser Mel, who had to fight off venue incompetence, and to the Korean restaurant where we ate dinner before hand.
Interestingly, our track Flakiest is getting a bit of air play on Active, and breafast jock Liam keeps ringing up Michael egging him on to get in touch with Cadbury. The more we play the track the more we'd like to move on something else. 'Flakiest' was fun to cobble together in late 2006 in anticipation of performing it to some startled Japanese***, but we have moved on a bit since then. New material in our sights include the Easy Off, BAM! ads and possibly cosmetics commericials. And maybe become serious artistes too. Nah, just kiddin' ya.
The next gig is the Wellington CD launch on the 29th. Be there or miss out.
* Where it rained non-stop. Wellington had a radiantly fine Sunday, we're told.
** In honour of the wolf pack leader of The Black Dog.
*** Inventor of the complex.
**** In the event they were actually bored.
